The wonderful news I alluded to yesterday, that I just wanted to walk around holding on to for a while, is a great step forward in my career, and a perfect example of synchronicity. Unlike the story I told, I didnt sign a client; I became one, to a brilliant literary agent, with whom I intend to do great things. A few days ago, Publishers Weekly announced that Rick Richter was joining the Zachary Schuster Harmsworth Agency specifically to focus on expanding their efforts in YA, Middle Grade, and picture books. I sent him a note suggesting that we could do some brilliant things together. Thirty seconds later, he responded, and agreed. We had an extensive discussion yesterday, and as of that phone call, Rick is now representing me, and we are building plans to do some remarkable things. The synchronicity is because we have history. In his career, among other accomplishments, he founded Ruckus Media, he co-founded Candlewick Press, and he was the President of Simon & Schuster Childrens Publishing who jumpstarted a young authors career when they made a preemptive offer on a book called HERE, THERE BE DRAGONS. I was on the verge of signing with one of two other agencies - but I decided to wait until I got back from the Salt Lake Comicon to decide. I read the announcement about Rick the morning after I got back. And I believe he is the ideal agent to represent me and my work. Everything happens for a reason. And sometimes, the magic just WORKS.
