The word terrorism is getting thrown around a lot lately. This weeks incident in Ottawa could encourage us as a nation to look at issues of mental health and other contributing factors in an act of senseless violence while we refuse to panic, or it could be used to justify more diminishing Canadian rights and more overseas military action while media works us into a frenzy of fear. The prime ministers tone tells us which way they want to go, but of course the fact that a lot of Canadians have been working hard to prevent excessive intrusions into citizen privacy under this government for years already told us that in advance. Now we are called on to be more vigilant against those kinds of abuses of power, while simultaneously discouraging our fellow citizens from welcoming an escalation of the police state merely through the process of calling the actions of a lone Canadian gunman international terrorism.
