The wrecking tug Tom Dowling was famous for pulling distressed ships out of danger. It was part of the team that took the Pontiac off the reef in 1891.. but lets be honest- the townspeople hated the boat. Its screeching whistle drove them nuts. Ill bet not too many were sad when it tore its side open in ice in 1907 and sank in 14 feet of water. It was recovered and later that spring sank and nearly drowned its owner that was sleeping in the cabin. Only a few weeks later it burst into flames at the dock and was destroyed. Three times in 9 months that the whistle was wet by Lake Superior. The third sinking happened on this date in 1908 at Ashland, Wisc.
