The writer Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı, who went by the pen name “the Fisherman of Halicarnassus,” discovered the natural beauties of Bodrum and environs while he was in exile. In 1945 the writer did his first boat cruise in the area together with some friends. When Kabaağaçlı moved to İzmir, he redirected the tour route toward Gökova. From 1957 onwards more and more people began to take part in the trip, which started to be held a few times every summer. It was Sabahattin Eyüboğlu who coined the name “Blue Voyage” (Mavi Yolculuk), and the route served as the subject or backdrop for a large number of works by literary, artistic, and intellectual figures, especially Azra Erhat. Photos are selected from the series by architect Ersen Gürsel. “SUMMER HOMES: Claiming the Coast” is on view at SALT Beyoğlu until November 16.
