The year? 1975, The dates? December 3rd and 4th, The place? Jovian space. The device? Pioneer 10. During that 16 hour period, the first man-made satellite entered the neighborhood of the largest planet in our solar system, snapped some pictures, sent home some postcards then continued on its merry way without so much as a howdy-do. Jupiter was left unimpressed while we humans were very impressed. 8 years later, Pioneer 10 became the molecule in a haystack as it left the solar system to zoom on into Star Trek territory.
