The year is 1961. It is winter in New York City. There is not a lot of snow but it is bitterly cold, especially cold and bitter for folk singer Llewyn Davis who is broke, does not have an overcoat or home, and cant seem to catch a break much less a career breakthrough. Llewyn imposes on friends and acquaintances for a couch to sleep on every night, but those relationships are becoming increasingly strained. Llewyn is perceived as arrogant, incorrigible, self absorbed and totally unreliable. But to Llewyn, he is simply focused on earning a living as a folk singer, although the greatest impediment to Llewyns success may be Llewyn himself. The film is INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, and it is sheer perfection. It won last years Grand Prix (2nd Place) at the Cannes Film Festival and it is a beautiful addition to the brothers lengthy canon. With Oscar Isaac as Llewyn and a supporting cast which includes Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake and the inimitable John Goodman. The music is superb and the cast does their own singing. Llewyns songs are as beautifully rendered by Mr. Isaac as his performance in the title role. Another gem from the Coen Brothers. NOTE: The Coens iconic and very popular 1996 film, FARGO, is becoming a TV series. FARGO premieres April 15 on FX. Enjoy the movies, and its TV spinoffs ... ROCK ON!
