The younger son in the parable is bringing unbearable shame on his family and especially on his father. Land was and is an incredibly precious possession in the Middle East. He is selling land that has history, probably paid for in blood. This son is digging the knife in over and over again. Having got what he wanted he leaves as quickly as he can. In fact, he leaves Israel altogether. In some faraway place he burns through his inheritance having a good time. But suddenly it comes to an end when he runs out of cash and the country he is living in experiences a famine. Running out of cash in a foreign country is a double disaster. If you are at home, you will at least have a friend or relative who will help you out. He has no money and his fair weather friends are long gone. Can it get worse? Yes, of course.
