TheMHS CONSUMER FORUM and TheMHS CARER/FAMILY FORUM An important part of the extended program for the 2013 Annual Mental Health Services (TheMHS) Conference is the facilitating of separate one-day Forums for mental health consumers and mental health carers (families). TheMHS Consumer Forum and TheMHS Carer Forum are held the day prior to the the start of the Annual TheMHS Conference. The objectives of these Forums are to enable mental health consumers and carers (families) to meet about issues of national importance from their own perspectives. for mental health consumers and carers to plan and conduct an educational forum which feeds into the main 3 day TheMHS Conference. to provide a networking opportunity for mental health consumers and carers to learn about what is happening in New Zealand and Australian States/Territories. to provide a forum for mental health consumers and carers to develop plans, policy and structures to further the aims of the mental health consumer movement and carer movement. TheMHS Consumer Forum and TheMHS Carer/Family Forum TheMHS Consumers’ Forum and Carers’ Forum are each organised by a locally-based committee. The forums are full days. When booking please ensure that you do not register for concurrent forums or workshops. TheMHS Forums are developed and organised by, and for, the constituent group. The program of each Forum focuses on mental health issues and is a platform for dissemination, discussion and learning about national mental health strategies. TheMHS Forums provide a place where people can present and debate relevant mental health issues; meet like-minded people prior to the main 3-day conference; consumers and carers/families can network and learn about good practice and programs around Australia and New Zealand. Each Forum is organised by a specific sub-committees which is responsible for choosing the title of their forum. The title and theme of the Forum relates closely to the overall theme of the annual conference. TheMHS continues to support and encourage Consumer and Carer advocacy networks and to encourage participation in the main conference. TheMHS Consumer Forums and TheMHSCarer Forums have become two of the major nationwide vehicles in Australia for the exchange of information and ideas by consumers and carers. Carers Forum (full day) Carers Forging the Future (CLICK HERE for Program) This Forum will provide something inspiring and informative for everyone. The day will be launched by Professor Alan Fels, Chair, Australian Mental Health Commission. Jack Heath, CEO, SANE Australia, will give the keynote address on Inspiring hope and recovery through leadership. After the keynote address there will be 3 streams of informative and interactive seminars covering policy and research, carer/family and carer workforce developments, and wellbeing. These sessions will focus on the roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), the strengthening of the carer/family voice, carers and recovery, and the latest updates on key legislation and service. Workshops on carer/family needs and support, and opportunities to relax and experience wellbeing sessions will be sure to inspire you. This will be a great opportunity to connect with fellow carers/family from Australia and New Zealand, to share experiences and discover what is happening here and beyond our geographic borders as we forge the future together. Consumers Forum (full day Consumer Leadership in forging our future Consumers have a vital role in influencing and shaping the future direction of a rapidly changing mental health landscape inclusive of mental health services, policies and systems. This Forum includes a wide range of opportunities to connect with others and to debate the diversity of views and ways to positively influence the current and future mental health field. Consumer-led initiatives will be showcased throughout the day. Consumer leaders in the field will talk about ideas that have influenced the design and implementation of innovative programs which contribute to improving the lives of people living with and recovering from mental ill health. Steve Harrington, TheMHS keynote speaker (executive director of the US National Association of Peer Specialists and president of the Assertive Community Treatment Association) will focus on peer leadership and peer specialist skills. His presentation will be followed by a Q &A session and then a number of workshops that will further explore the ideas raised early in the morning and in the keynote address.
