Theater for Development’ Project launched Theatre for Development Project, a developmental practice aimed at using theatrical performance as a participatory tool to help individuals and groups share experiences with a view to promoting social transformation, will be officially launched today. The launching to be held at the Alliance Francaise along Kairaba Avenue will witness a new stage performance. The project offers a practical and theoretical exploration of ways in which arts can be used by communities to enhance social transformation on their own terms. Project background The mission is to develop community sensibility and artistic appreciation through a range of performances and participatory activities that are stimulating, effective, and sometimes challenging; and to support the development of communities in performing arts, as well as create artists especially writers, directors, performers and creative producers through a programme of employment, mentoring and creative opportunities. At a press conference held at Alliance Francaise, Matty Jobe-Manka, coordinator of National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) disclosed that the project was an idea that was conceived in Germany. She added that she was lucky to be a theater fellow selected along side 17 youths from different countries. She spoke of her resolve to reach out and share her knowledge with young people in the rural areas . “Through the help of the National Youth Council, five participants will be selected from each of the five regions and in the two municipal councils in the country,” she said. Jobe-Manka told Journalists that the participants would undergo three-week intensive training on theater and performing arts. Madam Jobe-Manka said at the end of the training sessions participants are expected to return to their regions/municipalities and mobilize interested persons to engage in productions that will be based on their local experiences and concerns. “The process of developing theatre productions that are relevant to their communities will provide the opportunity for reflection and dialogue on issues of community concern, as well as government policies which affect their geographical areas,” she noted. She further revealed that the project is partnering with Alliance Francaise and the EBUNJAN theatre and that they will be conducting film acting and writing workshops, among others. Didier Marrtin, the director of Alliance Francaise, noted that Alliance Francaise as a cultural centre should be accessed by the youths and that he said is what they have been doing over the years.
