Theatre Review ‘Mutts’ was a great show that showcased a lot of new things coming to the theatre scene. Set in a pound, you hear how several lost dogs found their way there and what is to become of them. It was a breath of fresh air to see something original on the stage. The show itself, written by Johnny Grim is well put together, there were a few minor things that could be changed, but you have to showcase your work to iron out the kinks. Jane Sherwood has put together a very talented cast to bring this work to life. All were well directed and very little upstaging happened throughout the show considering all 9 ensemble actors were onstage for majority of the performance. Also for some of the actors to deliver the performance they did, considering that several have either not been onstage before or since high school also deserves a congratulations to the team. Special mentions would have to go to Rachael Maher (Molly) for her energy throughout. However scene stealers Cally Zanik (Jude) and Graeme Cross (Titan) stole the show and your hearts. Lighting was effective, however there was quite a bit of dead space for a few of the scenes, we can put part of this down to one of the globes blowing mid performance. The background sounds were an added bonus designed by Danni Close and the live music from the talented Mel Kay set the scene. The set was perfect, a claustrophobic cage that was built during the show really gave you the sense of how small the space is. The only thing was that it could have been built a little quicker, however that is a personal preference, but the effect itself really set the tone for the show. The show supports ‘Desperate For Love’ Dog Pound Rescue.
