Their owner died and they were left behind shut up in a house, not - TopicsExpress

Their owner died and they were left behind shut up in a house, not allowed outside for weeks. A relative contacted us for help...and how could we say no? Or try to separate two dogs that have learned to depend on each other? They have been moved several times...one foster became ill, one foster had cats, another foster had an insecure fence...they really deserve consistency and need a home where they can feel safe. I need at least a temporary place for them before next weekend. We took Barney and Jackie because they had no other options...when many rescues would have said no...Barney is not a spring chicken and Jackie is not a Basset. And pairs are notoriously hard to place. But we said yes, they need us, we will take them. With your help we have saved around 100 dogs every year for the past few years. We are nearing that number in this year alone so far. We are a breed-specific rescue...and many beautiful, perfect-looking Basset hounds have come through our program. But our philosophy is a little different...we see dogs in need and we worry about what we can do to save that dog...we dont focus on how adoptable the dog is. If we did...then we would have to turn away every dog over six years old...cause most people dont want a dog that old. Sad, but true. So far, we have been able to keep that philosophy because there are people that will adopt senior Basset hounds with arthritis and heart conditions, that will adopt pairs, that will adopt bagels, that will donate when they can. We dont want to be a rescue that refuses dogs because they are too old or because their ears arent quite long enough. I am thrilled every time we can save a young, scared Basset from a shelter, like the new girl Sugar, or from a life on a chain, like Ariel, I know we can make sure those dogs will go to homes where they will hopefully have wonderful long lives, and we have dedicated foster homes that work hard to get these young, scared dogs ready for their new lives. But I have to admit there is nothing more rewarding than knowing one of our volunteers is on the way to a shelter to pick up a 12 year old dumped senior. In this group of 3000+ there must be someone who can step up and give Barney and Jackie the love they deserve. Its not about finding the perfect dog for an adopter...although its wonderful when that happens...its about making a difference for the ones who are unwanted and abandoned. These two need a foster home. They need someone who can be patient because Jackie will be afraid at first. She might hide or cower because of whatever happened to her before we took her in. They need someone who can understand and realize that she is anxious when Barney is out of her sight. They are loving, sweet dogs. I want them in a home where they can stay until they are adopted...or stay there forever. Who can help me make that happen?
