Theme for the week beginning 12 October 2014 Now that the loonnggg weekend (masquerading as a short holiday) is over, it is time to go back to the grindstone for the last Term. Most people you meet this time of the year will much rather be somewhere else, doing something else than what they get paid to do. It is that time of the year. You have been working hard, burned the candle on both sides, and now you have to tackle the last part of this years journey. However, it is the last thing you want to do. Yet, you know you will do it because you have to. I read an article where a theatre play was discussed. So far I couldnt get the play to read online, even though I Googled it, but I get the jest of the story, and it made me wonder. Are you slowly dying? Quote from the article: Well, if you think of Charlie Castle (main character), when you read the play, . . . he is fabulously wealthy; has virtually anything that he needs at his disposal; and yet, hes profoundly unhappy. The very core of his soul is sick. And he knows why. And yet, hes juggling so many—so many people are living off of him, and making the golden goose lay his eggs; and as long as the golden goose is laying those golden eggs, everybody is happy, except for him. So, everybody is living off of this man, and feeding off of him; and theyre not at all concerned with the fact that hes slowly dying, and that they are contributing to his death. . . . this is a man whos dying to live a life that is consistent with his ideals. But nobody is interested. The bottom line for everybody is, how much money can you make for me? How can we keep the status quo? You are a commodity. We dont want the commodity thinking too much, because the commodity might see just how miserable he really is. And thats what Charlies beginning to see. So what made me wonder is this: it is the end of another year, and we have been working hard, but are we happy? Are we living our ideals and dreams, or are we just plodding along because we have to and think we cant do any better? Are we truly seeing the people around us, and are we helping them to die slowly, or are we encouraging them to live their lives true to their ideals and dreams? And can we look ourselves in the mirror and say we are happy, and that we are really not miserable? It is that time of the year to take stock and decide what we want, and take a leap and go for it.
