“Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession. For we are well able to overcome it.” But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” Numbers 13:30-31 (NKJV) We live in a world that is filled with very common yet very real dualities. This is to simply say that there are typically two distinct and often contrasting ways to consider a matter, a thought or how we choose to experience life. There is sunset and sunrise, life and death, joy and sorrow, power and weakness, allies and enemies, victory and defeat. Most importantly, when we consider our relationship with God we have the irrefutable choice to subscribe to the world or His word. We can walk with Him according to our faith or our flesh. The power of choice was given to us by a sovereign God that granted us this divine privilege during the early days of the earth’s existence when man was first given the option between good and evil. That same freedom of choice, also known as “volition” is still available and ultimately assists us in determining what or who we choose to believe. When we choose to believe God and His promises concerning our most pressing circumstances it often requires that we resist popular opinion. You know, the crowd that always tells us what we “should have, would have, and could have” done. Joshua and Caleb were confronted with similar opposition after they returned from their survey of the land of Canaan. They were two of 12 spies given this task. The 12 all agreed in principal concerning the report of the land. Then they told him (Moses), and said: “We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.” Numbers 13:27 (NKJV) This is about as far as their agreement went. Joshua and Caleb believed that the children of Israel could take possession of the land and were “well able” to overcome it. They knew they had the capacity to prevail and succeed through the power of God. On the other hand, the majority of 10 spies had a different evaluation of the matter filled with doubt, fear, and faithlessness. Not to mention that it defamed the delivering power of Almighty God. “And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out.” Numbers 13:32a (NKJV) Don’t be too tempted to flow with the crowd or be lured into believing that there is always strength in numbers. In fact, God oftentimes does His greatest work with the faith of the minority rather than the foolishness of the majority. Whose report will you believe? The world or the Word? Your flesh or your faith? The promises of God or people? It is our choice to make, and His promise to put our faith in and rely upon. Choose to believe the report of the Lord. It is based solely upon His word, and when His word goes forth it will never return void or empty. His word will always accomplish its designated purpose in our life if we only believe.
