Theodore Roosevelt had two Martha Bullochs in his life, his mother - TopicsExpress

Theodore Roosevelt had two Martha Bullochs in his life, his mother and his beloved Grandmamma. Grandmother Martha, along with her daughter Anna, moved from Georgia to the house here on East 20th Street in the mid 1850s just before Theodore was born. The two women wished to return South eventually but the start of the Civil War made that impossible. Grandmamma Bulloch said that she hoped she would not live to see the surrender of Richmond. She received that wish. Martha Bulloch died in October 1864, the month young Teedie turned eight. Richmond fell the following year. The family interred her in Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery. Daughter Anna and son-in law James Gracie would later come to rest beside her. Aunt Anna homeschooled the Roosevelts and many other neighborhood children. She married Mr. Gracie in 1866. It is worth noting that her maiden name is engraved in her headstone. It would be interesting to know why it does not have her married one. For those who many know the Roosevelt site in Green-Wood, these three headstones are about ¼ mile down the hill from the Roosevelt plot. (KM)
