Therapeutic riding is used as a form of therapy for individuals with many different types of disabilities. It is used to treat physical conditions, emotional conditions, and cognitive conditions. The following is a list of injuries and conditions that therapeutic riding is typically used for. That does not mean, however, that therapeutic riding would not benefit an individual with a condition or injury that is not listed. •Spina Bifida: lower spinal cord exposed at birth, causes paralysis and sensory loss •Cerebral Palsy: inability to fully control muscles, often has seizures and trouble making purposeful movements •Osteogenesis Imperfecta: hereditary disease that makes bones abnormally brittle •Muscular Dystrophy: group of genetic diseases characterized by the progressive weakness and degeneration of the skeletal muscles that control movement. •Multiple Sclerosis: autoimmune disease of the central nervous system in which gradual destruction of myelin occurs, causing muscular weakness, loss of coordination, and speech and visual disturbances •Visually Impaired •Hearing Impaired •Quadriplegic •Paraplegic •Spinal and brain injuries •Amputations •Arthritis •Heart Attack/Stroke •Autism: psychiatric disorder during childhood marked by deficits in communication and social interaction, preoccupation with fantasy, language impairment, and abnormal behavior •Developmentally Delayed •Attention Deficit Disorder •Learning Disabilities •Mental Retardation •Down Syndrome •Emotional Disabilities
