Therapists Note: Recently a truly wonderful young person told me that theres no true value to his life, and that if he were to pass from this place, his presence would not be missed. Now admittedly, he has had his troubles in the past and has not always acted so wonderful, or even lawful. But I wanted him to understand just how incorrect he was. I wanted him to understand that although negative acts decrease our value, positive acts and goodness increase our value and impact upon the world that we live in. I explained to him that he has never done anything that could permanently prevent his life from having value and purpose. We are who we are TODAY, once we have overcome who we were yesterday. And theres value in that growth. Although he listened and became very quiet, he didnt seem to really absorb it until I told him that his life and existence matters to me! Although it is my task to help him, my own life is better for having met him and having him in my life. I look forward to seeing him for our sessions, because he is wonderful and precious. He became really quiet and looked at me very intently as I told him that, if he were to pass from this place, that I would feel that loss and miss his presence. So, clearly he was wrong in his self-assessment that his existence does not matter to anyone. Because it matters to me. And his continual growth will surely result in it mattering to the many others that will have the pleasure of knowing HIM, for the him that he is NOW and is becoming tomorrow, regardless of who he used to be yesterday.
