Therapy With Children Sand Tray Play Art Group Movement Yoga Roxanne has extensive therapeutic training & experience with children and their families. For the last 10 years she has worked in elementary and high school settings as a School Counselor/Therapist, and has experience with pre-schoolers as well. She uses therapies designed for, but not limited to children. These include Sand Tray, Play, and Art Therapies to enable children, to heal in the environments in which they are most comfortable. Somatic experiencing means that we are opening our awareness to all areas of healing: emotional, physical, energetic, and spiritual. Children are naturally in a “therapeutic process,” so by encouraging them to “play” in sand, or to draw, or even to “play” games with their therapist, allows them a safe environment in which to share their challenges more easily and without pressure. Trauma may be revealed in the sand tray, which represents the “child’s world.” As the child “plays,” he or she may experience feelings of grief, frustration, joy, or anger. While feeling safe & understood, the child can then begin to resolve, learn, and heal. Often, emotions and other difficult feelings can be safely, and fully expressed and then resolved through making a “picture” within the sand. In addition, the texture of the sand elicits a connection to the unconscious. It is similar to free association writing, visualizing, and meditation. It can feel like dreaming while awake.
