There are 2.5 million (2014 reports) immigrants from various parts of India who currently work as unskilled laborers in Kerala, which is almost equal to the number of Malayalis working in gulf countries as per the reports. They are employed in all kinds of menial tasks from masonry, carpentry, driving and construction to all forms of rudimentary work one can think of. The reason? Simple. While a daily wage laborer in Kerala charges 1000 for a days work, the same when done by the protagonists in our story, works to around 500-600.This short film however tries to see what could happen if they diversify into other areas of work, say education? [The introduction is so that even if you dont understand Malayalam, you still get the hang of what the short film is trying to say]. Is the state which elected the first communist government in the world, on the track to a new form of servility? Many questions ring in peoples mind. Then again these immigrant laborers are called bhai by the natives. Vestiges of the old camaraderie still exists it seems. Lal Salaam! PS: Thankyou Jubilant for sharing this video. Wonderful perspective! :D
