There are 4 types of Tafseer : 1. Those who understand the language know. Although modern arabic is slightly different from the old hejazi dialect in which the quran was revealed and is codified. Arabs and Arabic speakers know this by default and understand most of the quraan linguistically. 2. Everyone must know This type of tafseer does not does not depend on your knowledge, intellect or skill ( knowing the language) but everyone is necessitated to know it. It is knowing and understanding the ayaat of aqeedah, if im not mistaken they do not have to be memorized but aqeedah HAS to be understood. There is no excuse on any muslim to not know our aqeedah ,which is ofcourse derived from the quraan. i.e understanding tawheed. 3. Ulema have to understand This is something which the ulema have to have a grasp of in order to be qualified as a scholar. They achieve this due to their extensive knowledge on sunnah, their intellect and from the amount of time they spend actually pondering over the verses and trying to understand the quraan and sunnah. Take Surah Al Masad - The surah regards abu lahab and his wife. ordinarily we would just pass by this ayah not gaining much of an insight from it. Imaam Shafi however derived from the ayah the understanding that the marriages of mushrikeen are not invalid. How? The ayah mentions abu lahabs wife as his wife. It did not state her to be a lover or girlfriend but rather Allah recognized their union despite them not being muslim nor having a marriage contract as per islamic regulation. 4. Allah Knows This type of tafseer is only known to Allah. There are some verses in the quraan which are a bit obscure in meaning. There are the letters which occur in the beginning of some surah. Allah mentions that he has some limbs in some ayaat. The nature of these limbs is known to Allah as are the other things and we do not have knowledge on them.
