There are a LOT of misconceptions about the measles floating around right now, and its scaring parents. Lets just take a step back and look at the facts: *In the 1950s, before the vaccine was common, there were around 500,000 reported cases of measles per year. As measles wasnt considered serious at that time, and wasnt a reportable disease, and most children did get it, its assumed there were more like 2 - 3 million cases per year. *About 500 kids per year died of measles back in the 50s. This was 1 in 1000 if we look at the reported cases only, and 1 in 4000 - 6000 if we consider the assumed cases as well. *Serious complications, like encephalitis, happen at 1 in 2000 or fewer cases. *No child has died of the measles in the U.S. since 1995, despite 100 - 600 cases per year. Medical science has advanced significantly since the 1950s and we now know that the most serious complications can be minimized with vitamin A supplementation.
