There are a few historic Chicago Style Bungalows on my block that have recently been bought, and are being “rehabbed” in order to be flipped for profit. I have no issues with this practice, when done with respect and thoughtfulness. We did the same thing in 2009 when we moved into the neighborhood, except our goal was to create and preserve a unique home, not to collect a profit. These real estate entrepreneurs are obviously not from the neighborhood – clearly knowing little about the history and basic etiquette of the community. They rehab these beautiful houses on the cheap, removing most of what makes them historic, and in the process making them completely homogeneous. Today I witnessed one of these entrepreneurs in a white Lexus with gold trimming double parked on my street blocking the road, and causing the street sweeper to reroute is path and countless residents to either wait or back up down a one way and change course. There was a parking spot up a half block, but I am sure he did not want to wrinkle his expensive suit or god forbid sweat. A half hour later the man in the suit comes out of the house on his phone, shouting directions to some poor soul on the other end of the line. He proceeds to take his time moving the car and then speeds off through the neighborhood – where kids are playing and people are walking their dogs. All I can say is karma is not always a pleasant thing.
