There are a lot of issues in the world that annoy me, but none - TopicsExpress

There are a lot of issues in the world that annoy me, but none grind my gears as much as the topic of cultural appropriation. In our overly PC world-- where egg shells seem to be the path well tread-- we are told by the socially just and totally righteous that we need to be increasingly aware of how we display our appreciation of other cultures. Fair enough. I think it goes way overboard when every little thing we do is scrutinised by pretentious people with a guilt complex-- small things such as wearing Native American feathers to a multicultural costume party are seen by some as being culturally insensitive. What people need to understand is that in these instances white people are not slurring a culture by any means-- rather its a celebration of that culture. Being an Italian-Australian who surrounds himself with culturally diverse friends, has an appreciation for women of all cultures, and who frankly knows who he is as a person, I wouldnt get upset if an Australian walked into a party wearing a Mario costume, spouting half-assed Italian and eating a bowl of spaghetti Bolognese. Because I know who I am as a person, Ive accepted my culture, and frankly, Ive got more important things to worry about than how socially unjust and culturally insensitive people are when theyre really just having a laugh. What Im trying to say is-- just because there are people out there who feel guilty for historical plights and feel uncomfortable when other people take on other cultures, you have no right to tell minorities what they should be offended by and what they shouldnt be offended by. They can work it out for themselves, cheers.
