There are a lot of myths when it comes to practicing mindfulness. Stereotypes of monks sitting for hours upon hours meditating may come to mind, and you may think, “I’ll never be able to achieve that kind of focus!” Our generation has been trained to multitask more than one thing at a time — for example, how many times have you caught yourself watching TV, with your computer in your lap working on homework, and texting on your phone at the same time!? We live in a sensory overload! The beauty of mindfulness is that it can be done anywhere, anytime. You can be mindful for one minute or one hour — any amount of practice helps. We can apply ideas of mindfulness to everyday tasks, too. A great way to start is to say to yourself, “I am going to practice being completely mindful while writing this paper or working on this homework assignment.” So that means no other distractions, such as our phone or TV. Even these little moments of mindfulness pay off in the long run, because we begin to really notice how distracted and out of the moment we are. The best moment to be in is this moment.
