There are a lot of people I know who frown whenever women empowerment is discussed as an issue. Discussed too extensively; Move on, get over it; Why stories of pathos all the time; Not again! - would be some of the many reactions that Ive come across over time. Im not going to try and change the opinion of the imbecile, but a little education always helps. So here goes two instances, that will hopefully make all of you ,who at some point of time, have sighed out loud impatiently whenever gender issues have been discussed, realize about their ridiculous selves. Straight off the internet from reliable sources. - The topic of this article is the practice at the rich ashram in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, where widows are paid meager allowances to spend all day praying. Many of these widows are not old, so they may be facing decades more of such treatment — two-fifths were married before the age of 12 and almost a third were widows by the age of 24. Discouraged from remarrying, they have no husbands to support them, even if they have children they may be kicked out of their homes, they have few if any skills for working, are discouraged from remarrying, face discrimination if they do try to earn a living... (but are pushed into prostitution eventually and forcefully). - Female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as female genital cutting and female circumcision, is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. FGM is practised as a cultural ritual by ethnic groups in 27 countries in sub-Saharan and Northeast Africa, and to a lesser extent in Asia, the Middle East and within immigrant communities elsewhere. It is typically carried out, with or without anaesthesia, by a traditional circumciser using a knife or razor. The age of the girls varies from weeks after birth to puberty; in half the countries for which figures were available in 2013, most girls were cut before the age of five. Khatna is what the Muslims call this practice. A certain somebody informed me a couple of days ago that there is a specific place in Calcutta itself where this is executed. Im yet to confirm that. :)
