There are a lot of people who are more versed in the history and struggle of trans persons (and probably have better language to use), and no I have not seen the movie yet, but the premise intrigues me. Is Jerod Leto protraying a trans-woman the same as a mammy role? The reviews Ive read so far said the movie was a very compelling portrait not only of the LGBT communitys response to HIV but all people. Would it have been better to type-cast a trans woman to play the role? I feel like Tom Hanks did a great job in Philadelphia and Rock Hudson probably would have ruined it. (Yes, I know Rock had been dead for 7 years when the movie came out. Shut up.) My point is that I thought acting was about telling a story that was not your own.
