There are a lot of people who find great fulfillment in humanitarian deeds that reach out to some segment of society or some world relief effort. There are thousands of causes for which one can invest their time, their talents and their treasures. All of these things are worthy of our attention. What is sad, however, is when people go off to save the world and the people that are nearest to them are suffering. Paul seems to promote the idea that we start by strengthening our own household and those who come under our immediate responsibility. From there we move on to be sure that fellow believers or fellow members of the family of God are provided for. From that point we can move beyond in reaching out to all mankind. Paul says in Galatians 6:10 “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” Or as the Message Bible says, “Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith.” You do not have to travel to the ends of the earth to find people that are hurting and who could use a touch from someone who cares. Let’s take a look around us and look with fresh eyes to see those that God wants us to befriend right in our own backyard.
