There are a million reasons not to shop at the big two, but here is just one more: when the Supermarkets run a special they are generally not copping the lost profit. This is usually paid for by the supplier instead. In the case of fruit and veg there is evidence that its built into the contracts that the farmer must supply items at a loss for certain weeks of the year. These contracts also contain harsh confidentiality clauses that prevent farmers from disclosing the supermarkets dirty tactics. How do they get away with it? Because too many people shop there. The supermarkets have approximately 80% of the fruit and veg sales in Australia. This means that farmers cant afford NOT to enter into the horrendous contracts with them. How does Pompello deal with farmers? By going to the wholesale market and paying them a fair price.
