There are a number of alarming things to me about what is in the feed for farmed salmon that is so far removed from what they would feed on in the wild. Just as an example, when do salmon ever feed on wheat? To my knowledge, its not grown in the ocean... In a nutshell, avoid farmed salmon. My thanks to Forever Nutrition for this post. I emailed NZ King Salmon to ask what the fish are fed this is their response; kingsalmon.co.nz/ Statement of Ingredients of Feed The New Zealand King Salmon Co Ltd hereby certifies that salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) that is produced on the farms owned by the Company are fed with imported extruded feed produced by major international suppliers. The ingredients vary depending on price and availability but the underlying philosophy of The New Zealand King Salmon Company is to ensure the very best of raw materials are used, especially fishmeal and fish oil. Poultry Protein meals and oil Fishmeal Fish Oil Vegetable Protein meals Wheat/Starches Mammalian meals Vitamins and Minerals Astaxanthin Our feed suppliers certify that our feed is 100% wholesome, complies with stringent food safety requirements and is non-GMO. In line with our commitment to sustainability, we are net producers of fish protein and fish oil; the salmon we harvest contain more fish protein and fish oil than we use in our feed. We use a balanced extruded diet. Each formulation is made to best suit the particular life stage the fish is at regarding size and time of year. This gives best performance in terms of growth rate, feed efficiency and flesh quality. The main change in formulation through the life of the fish is the ratio of oil to protein. As a fish grows it requires less protein and more oil and the amount of astaxanthin required falls. By test the proximate analysis of our major feed formulation is: Protein 38% Oil 26% Carbohydrate 23% Moisture 8% Ash 5% Signed Grant Rosewarne CHIEF EXECUTIVE
