There are a number of reasons why I only now took the courage of calling myself a photographer. Those who know me know that I like to take things seriously, and Im perhaps my worst critic. After loving years with a basic Pentax, I got my first digital DSLR as a wedding present from my husband, just over five years ago. It took me three years to come out of auto, since I found the controls overwhelming (I was one who thought I would never learn to drive, and I thought the same of my camera and manual). I used this time to learn composition. Then Lola came along and just had to take the plunge and get my head around how to use the camera properly. This followed by a disappointed result from a photo shoot by a professional photographer, and my second pregnancy, forced me to take things even more seriously and learn / train. Over the last year I attended several workshops in Cambridge, including individual tuition, then started to follow some international photographers and slowly but surely learned from them (directly from workshops and indirectly from looking at their work), from studio lighting, to family and newborn posing to outdoor photography. One of the most revealing things for me was to learn and respect editing. I learn the importance of shooting raw and the fact that Jpegs are “prints”. Things are certainly starting to click. I learn to love “clean editing” : working with levels as to make photos be purely as good as they can be, reflecting what they “see”. I’m just now revisiting family photos. This is a new edit of an old photo. To think that last February I thought photo 2 was actually pretty good…
