There are a whole lot of places in the world outside of this magnificent country where one really cannot take his own safety for granted. There are children living in war, really actually living it, not just watching it on TV. They rehearse bomb drills and walk to school on careful routes and are taught to look for things that are out of place. As a parent I see the rare but horrid things happen on the news within our borders and I dread the heavy burden I know I am laying on my kids when I explain tragedy that happens to these other people. But when I tuck them in at night, I can kiss their sweet faces and reassure them that this is not commonplace, that they dont need to worry. I cant imagine what it must be like to be a mother in a place that doesnt have our military. I cant imagine tucking in my kids at night and reminding them to be careful where they walk tomorrow and be careful of anyone acting shifty and to remember to get under the desk if you hear the alarms or an explosion. Thank you to every single person who has ever volunteered to make that reality unfathomable to me.
