There are an estimated 3.5 million immigrants in South Africa. These individuals frequently represent the poorest and most desperate individuals residing in South Africa. To be legally in the country, most immigrants must apply for asylum, but submitting an application for asylum seeking status is largely impossible because of the corruption and inefficiency of the refugee reception centres. Consequently, less than half of the immigrants living in South Africa are documented. This allows government, employers, and individuals to violate their rights daily, leaving them seemingly without recourse. People Against Suffering Suppression Oppression and Poverty fights for the rights of immigrants through activism and advocacy. In addition to lobbying for improved services at the refugee reception offices, PASSOP is involved in a variety of projects aimed at improving the lives of immigrants, whether through the distribution of humanitarian aid or through legal avenues. Additionally, PASSOP aims to decrease the number of immigrants forced to flee to South Africa by coordinati ng projects to alleviate starvation and desperation in Zimbabwe,D.R congo, etc..... the countries currently producing the largest number of immigrants in South Africa.
