There are conflicting versions of todays events at Desperlie Crescent, Laventille, where Keshorn Daniel, 19, was shot and killed by police. Residents say Daniel was unarmed. Police, on the other hand, says Daniel was with two other men who, when challenged by officers, opened fire. Insp Wayne Mystar said, a foot patrol of officers encountered three men acting in a suspicious manner. The three men were challenged. The men opened fire on police and the police returned fire. There was an exchange of gunfire. He said, Two men escaped and one person was fatally wounded. One resident, however, said: Three jeeps came up from Laventille Road district, fly up here, searched Keshorn Daniel and leave him and let him walk in this track. While he walking in the track, it have police coming from Shouter Hill walking. They reach him with a box of food, eating, in his hand and they murder him in a yard for no reason. Daniels brother Kerwin said, We need justice in our community for police brutality. If a police has to get charged, he has to get charged. Meanwhile, following the incident, residents staged a protest by burning debris and blocking access roads. There were a number of skirmishes and gunfire could be heard around the area. Insp Mystar said, All the main arteries into Laventille were blocked. Even the Fire Service, in attempting to extinguish the fire, were stoned. An off-duty soldier who was driving home was shot in the knee. He was taken to hospital for treatment. Insp Mystar said, The police will be here 24/7 until this matter is totally resolved to keep law and order in this area.
