There are days when cooking dinner is the last thing I feel like doing, yet I treasure this almost-daily ritual because it grounds me in the physical world like nothing else. Because I cook, I have to show up in the kitchen and then pay attention to the evidence of all my senses. I cant drift away into my imagination like an untethered balloon. Cooking makes me an explorer, always on the lookout for a perfectly ripe avocado or the wonderful Italian butter that occasionally turns up at a certain market stall and then disappears for the next six months.
