There are few things that make me feel we are truly lost as a species. I see hope and giving and love on a daily basis, and it inspires me to believe we will continue to evolve into a better and more just world. Then I see large swaths of people defending torture. I know of no religion that justifies torture. I know of no objective morality standard that justifies torture. I know of no precept of spiritualism that justifies torture. I know of no libertarian ideal that justifies torture. The only concept that justifies torture is the belief that your actions are moral by default, and no means of judging other people could apply to your behavior. It is purely subjective delusion, a refusal to submit to any concept outside your own ego to determine the worth of your actions. It is self-centered egotism of the most base and trivial kind. Our treaties on torture were written by our ancestors in a war-torn world where the survivability of the United States was, unlike now, in question. That they should be overwritten by some populist ignorance based on egotism and myopia fills me with despair.
