There are four USATF-NE young athletes competing at the 8th IAAF World Junior Championships starting July 27 in Eugene. Two are hammer throwers from RI, Clarence Gallop of the Providence Cobras and Charlie Ionata from Barrington. From Montgomery, Vermont we have Elinor Purrier running the 3000m SC. And from Massachusetts, Jonathan Green of Shrewsbury is running the 10,000m race. Best of luck to all of our athletes two weeks from now. ------------------ From our website dated July 7: Charlie Ionata (Barrington RI) and Elinor Purrier (Montgomery VT), and Jonathan Green (Shewsbury MA) won their events at the USA Junior Track & Field Championships on Sunday in Eugene Oregon. The meet was the qualifier for the World Junior (not turning 20 in the calendar year) Championships which will also be held in Eugene July 22-27. Ionata, the 2013 Rhode Island state champion in the hammer and a freshman at Wake Forest, won the 6kg hammer in 2221. He noted, It’s been a dream of mine for a while and it feels great to finally (get the chance to) compete at a world event.” Placing second by an inch and also making the US team is Clarence Gallop of Providence, a freshman at Charleston Southern. The Rhode Island presence continued down the results as Mahlik Handley (Providence/URI) and Adam Kelly (Barrington RI) were fourth and fifth; all competed in the NE Junior Olympic program. A University of New Hampshire freshman, Purrier took honors in the 3000m steeplechase in 10:24.46. A USATF-NE Athlete of the Month for XC in 2012, she had won the steeplechase at last weekends USATF-NE championship as a tune-up. Green, a multi-time Massachusetts state champ out of St Johns-Shrewsbury now at Georgetown University, won the 10,000 meter race in a personal best 30:54.62 and also advances to the Worlds.
