There are have been alot of stories about investors of Pakistan origin who gang raped a 23 -year lady. There are many questions: Are all foreigners investors? Is the term investment or investor wrongly used? Have these foreign investors done something recommend to our country? How many Ugandans have got jobs from their investments? If Ugandans are employed by these investors how are they treated? These are among the many questions about foreign investment in Uganda. What i know about these investors both local & foreign is that they pay their employees very low salaries, not only that but also paid late or after along period of time. It is very common to get dismissed from the job without being paid. In addition, workers are overworked even on public holidays. With unemployment rate of 83% among Ugandan graduates it is a proof that these investments have done little or nothing on helping us. It is a very common practice that these investors normally employ people from their home countries or relatives/friends. Ugandans may be given casual labour & are treated as second class Citizens. There is alot to be desired about investors. These investors are responsible for increased land grabbing/land conflicts, murders or generally suffering of local Ugandans. Among the places where land conflicts are orders of the day include Kayungu, Sembabule & others. Investors have resulted in environmental degradation for example they have destroyed national forests, lakes have been poisoned with industrial wastes/gases, swamps have been reclaimed to pave way for settlement/farming,etc. All these activities will result in climatic changes & increased diseases. It is time to have planned investments which will not endanger the lives of people, birds, animals or the environment. We should not cause massive suffering to Gods creations in the name of investment/development. Finally, i want to assure Ugandans that no body is against investments but the way they come & how they are handled.
