There are lots of cats and kittens available for adoption at SPCA branches throughout the country, so if youve been thinking about adding one to your family why not do it this long weekend? Youll have an extra day to help them ease into the household - and an extra day to hear those happy purrs. Here are a few tips to help your new cat settle in: Make sure youre all set with food and water bowls, a litter tray, and bedding (although cats like to choose their own nap spots) before collecting your feline friend. Give your cat time to explore. Open the cage or carry box in a secure area and let kitty venture out when s/he is ready. You may want to let your cat get used to one room before allowing access to another. Show your cat where to find food, water and the litter tray. Be patient with toileting - it may take a while for puss to cotton on. Keep rowdy household noise to a minimum. Keep kitty indoors for at least the first week - longer if possible. And when you let him/her out, make sure s/he has a bell collar to warn the birds... Remember, you dont own a cat, it rules you. And if your bladder is full, thats the precise moment your new ruler will choose to curl up in your lap for the first time!
