There are many forms of worship (some will say its just singing), in the U.S.. The oldest is Shape Note or also known as Sacred Harp. Most will say, What is that? Some will say, oh, that was just a southern thing. It was developed in England but was refined to what it is now in the Northern U.S.and moved its way to the South. From there it moved west, and into California. I remember seeing these strange books in storage as a kid and into my teens at several churches my parents attended while growing up. Gospel songs and gospel hymns came from this style of music and is seeing a big resurgence among young and old alike.... Its be featured in movies in the last 10 years starting with Cold Mountain. It may make you a bit uncomfortable, it may take you out of your comfort zone, you may even love it as I do, but it is our History. If given a chance, give it a try and you may even get hooked.
