There are many parts of the world that are arid, and unsuitable - TopicsExpress

There are many parts of the world that are arid, and unsuitable for growing crops. But one never thinks that that those effects would be prevalent so close to home. The drought in California, is now thought to be, the worst in 1200 years. Yup 1200. YEARS! So its no surprise that certain staple crops, are going to suffer, as tough choices are being made on water allocation. The latest predicted crop shortage is Avocados. Taking 74 gallons of water, per pound to produce. There is just not enough water to go round. Also there is indications that Mexican Drug Cartels are dabbling in the crop availability like they did with limes last year. I think this all points to the fact that we as consumers, need to be more aware of what we eat, the portions we eat, where we source our food, and how much food we throw out. In Nelson, its hard to think of water shortages when we have billions of litres of fresh water flowing by our city every day. But these are things we must think of if we choose to think of ourselves as global consumers
