There are many scholarships for students from Arenac, Tuscola and Bay County regions. We have listed only those that are art related, however, we strongly encourage you to check out the website and see if there are any general or high school specific scholarships for which you can apply. • CATHERINE JEAN MacDONALD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Catherine Jean MacDonald was a 5th grade math teacher at Bangor Central, but her interests and talents reached far beyond education, including a love for all fine arts. She thought of a plan for gathering state matching funds for educational television and was appointed by the State of Michigan to the State Working Committee for Education Television which developed Delta College and Educational Television Channel 19, which we enjoy today. Catherine Jean will be remembered through this memorial fund. Criteria: Bay County resident. Student must intend to study the fine arts - theater, arts, music, dance, including public TV and public radio. Financial need. • HAZEL E. McCLURE COMMERCIAL ART EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established in the name of Hazel E. McClure, a long-time resident of Bay City who graduated from the Cleveland School of Art and was employed as head of the art department at the Autolite Company. Mrs. McClures love of art was evident in her life at home and at work. The scholarship is to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress and provide assistance to Bay County students following a course of study in commercial art. Criteria: Bay County resident. Full-time undergraduate, in a commercial art program. Minimum 2.5 GPA. • CLAIR A. AND HANNAH WHITE EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP The Clair and Hannah White Scholarship was established in 1992 by their sons in recognition of years of community involvement by their parents. Clair held two statewide offices: Michigan State University Board of Trustees and Wayne State Board of Governors. He was also Bay City’s residing gadfly, always questioning decisions made in the public arena. Hannah was active in many home economic organizations and ran the first nursery for the Bay City Public Schools for working mothers in World War II. Mr. and Mrs. White taught the students of Bay City Public and Parochial schools and Bangor Township schools for a combined total of 67 years. Criteria: Bay County resident. Bay City Central High School or Bangor John Glenn graduate. Attending any public college or university in Michigan. Full-time student. Exhibit academic potential, leadership qualities, and characteristics of overcoming social, political and/or economic obstacles. Participation in student council, drama, clubs, newspaper, athletics, yearbook, or community involvement. Major in a curriculum dealing with civics, history, economics, home economics, interior design, or nutrition. • JOHN D. WRIGHT MEMORIAL EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP John D. Wright was a creative craftsman of wood. He spent many quiet hours in his basement workshop, designing wooden inlaid topped boxes, salad bowls and other items. No two were ever alike. John had built most of the furniture in his home and designed and remodeled the entire kitchen. From 1946 until his retirement in 1981, John taught art classes at Bay City Central High School. His wife, Wilma, established this educational award in 1995, to memorialize John’s dedication to and love for his job and teaching. Criteria: Bay County resident. Graduate of any Bay County high school. Full-time student in an art curriculum. Financial need. Recipients may reapply.
