There are many who question why it was necessary for Jesus to die on the cross in order for God forgive our sins. Why, they ask, couldn’t God just forgive without this sacrifice? After all, they say, if we are sorry for our sins and ask for forgiveness, shouldn’t that be enough? So what need of Jesus’ sacrifice? These verses answer that question. After Adam and Eve had eaten of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; After they had become aware of their physical and spiritual nakedness, God comes down to the garden of Eden apparently as He had done many times before. Adam and Eve in their innocence, made in the image of God, enjoyed face to face communion with their maker. To be in the presence of God would have been their greatest joy. But sin changed all that. Now His presence is the last thing they desired. When they sense His presence in the garden their first response is to run and hide. And this was not just a momentary trepidation on their part because of their sin, but is indicative of an all too real change in their very characters. In a very real sense Adam and Eve were no longer the beings that God had created in His image. They had in a most negative manner been “born again” into creatures of sin. And God now asks a series of questions the answers to which reveal just how deep this fundamental transformation of their very inmost nature went. For more see the blog.
