There are more people out there that dont understand dog behavior than those that do. I took Kitai to the local feed store. While in there, 2 ladies were squeaking a toy a few rows away from us. As we approached them to get to the checkout, Kitai looked at them, and started barking. The ladies moved closer and squeaked the toy closer to him, causing him to bark and back up further. Uneducated humans. I told them to put the toy on the ground and back away. They looked puzzled. I explained to them that Kitai was barking because he was frightened, and them moving closer caused social pressure causing him to back away. I told them that he could explore the toy on the ground to see how it affected him w/o it making noise, and that they needed to back to give him room so he felt comfortable exploring. When given the appropriate opportunity, he was able to recover quickly. And ANOTHER thing, how come whenever people see your dog and want to pet them, the first thing they do is ask the dog to sit, sit, SIT..... They said, Oh, he doesnt know sit. And I said, oh yes he does, he only responds to hand gestures right now. Verbal cues will come later on in training.
