There are more than 700 known species of “hard ticks,” or Ixodidae, which are distinguished by their hard external shield. About 80 of those species are found in the United States, with certain species being more common in some areas than others. Different tick species may carry different diseases, for example, the Blacklegged (deer) tick can carry Lyme disease, while the American dog tick can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia. Ticks may transmit multiple pathogens, making disease diagnosis even more difficult sometimes. You can learn more about the geographic distribution of the more common tick species at the CDC website clicking this link: cdc.gov/ticks/geographic_distribution.html
