There are probably only three reasons for going to see 12 Years: a) Youre a fan of McQueens directing and previous films, b) You want to catch up for the Oscar season which is quickly approaching, or c) youre a masochist. For over two hours the despair and violence between characters seems unrelentless and without comedic relief, which may be a drawback for many. But given the weight of subject matter McQueen was faced with for the project, its fair to say he couldnt have approached it any other way without producing results. At times you may want to turn away. But theres something to be said for knowing that the films not only meant to be entertaining, its educational and important, perhaps one of the most important films of the year. If you want giggle and slap at your knee for a few hours, youre free to do so. However, if you want to learn the many meaning of humanity and empathy, 12 Years should be one of your first choices.
