There are so many levels to this tragic letter. This was a soldier. He obviously believed war was sometimes necessary. But the war he was sent to fight was not. And when he had done what he saw as his duty, the government he fought for abandoned him. This is the tragic legacy of many soldiers in the USA and other countries. Remember it when a politician or a general is paying lip service to them and entreating you to "support our troops." we can best support them by not sending them to die for no good reason, by not ordering them to commit and cover up war crimes and by taking care of them after they experience the horrors this poor soul did.
