There are so many things that people take for granted - not on - TopicsExpress

There are so many things that people take for granted - not on purpose, but because they dont really know anything different. It took me a long time to learn how to drink from a straw. I still cant really whistle but I keep trying. My parents got a recorder instrument for me in third grade so I could join the recorder band and I actually learned how to do it. That was exciting, but I admit I wasnt happy when they got it because I was so scared of failure. Im a little louder than most people when I eat because my jaws are not aligned so my lips dont come together easily when Im chewing. Its those kinds of things that may seem little but are a really big deal. They matter. My parents didnt let me get away with not trying or giving up. They told me I could do it and wouldnt do anything for me. They kept getting straws for me. They encouraged me to play soccer and swim even though breathing was hard when my nostril was collapsing on one side. Im glad for that because soccer and swimming are my favorite things to do now. Cleft kids are tough and we are strong. Just give us time! Next time you see a cleft kid trying, give him or her encouragement to keep going even if it doesnt happen right away. Thanks for your support, everyone. xoxo Andi
