There are some opportunities that come our way rarely and breaking ice at least 10mm thick is one of them. We were asked to deliver a boat for a client from Autherley Junction to Droitwich Marina during the Christmas window We started off on the Monday after Easter with a deadline of the following Sunday when various parts of the route were due to close again. We climbed the 21 into Wolverhampton carving a path through the frozen pounds and fighting to open lock gates with ice behind them. When we reached the top a passer-by told us that the ice was even thicker along the Birmingham main line. I did not stop to measure it but some looked to be nearer 20mm thick. I quickly found that you either keep up a reasonable speed or come to a halt and if you do backing up and taking a run at it is the only way to get going again.
