There are those who claim to be guided solely by the Constitution, who evidence little or no respect for the government that Constitution established. There are those who rage against "elites," claiming to represent a more common man, who dismiss the opinions of clear majorities (demonstrated in polls, manifest in election results) in a manner that is as condescending as that of any other self-appointed "elite." There are those who profess to fear the political manifestation of philosophical absolutism that is totalitarianism, who employ against it a heated rhetoric that is by far the most absolutist in contemporary American discourse. In fact, they are proud of their absolutism, of their insistence on the simplicity of black and white over the complexity of grays, of the way they dismiss dialogue as weakness and deride compromise as treason. I am going to start calling them Pogo. One can only hope... ;-)
