There are three ways to get something done: do it yourself, employ someone, or forbid your children to do it. (Monta Crane) Judo Parenting Children are wired to push against resistance. The more you need your child to do something, the more he will resist. This is why what kids need most is parents who dont need them. When we give our emotional remote controls to our kids and ask them not to push our buttons with their sticky little hands, were just asking for trouble. If you can get to a place where you dont take your childs behavior personally, youll be amazed at how calm and connected you can remain with them. When its time to clean up after dinner, leave the strong-arm tactics to C.O.P.S. and practice Judo Parenting instead. Use their own momentum to guide them. Jeff, I know you want to play football outside with your friends. You can only clean up the kitchen for 15 minutes and then you need to go out and play before it gets dark. Then sit back and watch the sink bubbles fly. -Hal Runkel, LMFT, Author of ScreamFree Parenting & ScreamFree Marriage
