There are transfer rumours and then there are transfer bombshells.... Today, I want us to explore this mind boggling, fu^& %@!! story that developed when Lionel Messi alerted the world that he may not end his career at his boyhood club, Barcelona, after admitting he does not know where he will be playing next year. Immediately, the story was picked up by the biggest gossip mongers and some reporters spend money and time analysing the whole issue to come to one unbelievable Conclusion: Messi could be headed to Manchester United. Why, you may ask? Its all about the money for Messi, apparently, and its a question of who can afford him without resulting to selling milk and cookies and other unmentionables. 1. United are the only English club that could afford to buy Messi, particularly if Barcelona were to demand his €250m (£195m) buyout fee in one payment, which would be likely, due Uefa’s financial fair play that rules out City & Chelsea & PSG. 2. Louis van Gaal has been assured there is no limit on the transfer budget, by vice chairman Ed Woodward: “Whether it’s a [world] record or not doesn’t really resonate with us. What resonates is an elite player that the manager wants who is going to be a star for Manchester United.” This is crucial because, Messi’s five-year contract (£16.3m a season) and his buy-out clause total the amount to £275m. Only Real Madrid can pay this much money... But this is not about RM! 3. United’s record £750m, 10-year kit deal with Adidas starts next season, meaning the club can expect £75m a season from that contract alone. The expansion of the club’s portfolio of major sponsors and the fanbase of about 659 million around the world, makes United confident that Messi’s signing would be financially successful. ... Of course, these are rumours and speculations, considering Messi’s comment came hours after he said it was “lies” that there had been conversations between his representatives and City and Chelsea. Speaking after a 3-1 win over Atlético Madrid, in which he scored the final goal, Messi told Barça TV: “I don’t demand anything for me to stay because I have no intention of leaving anywhere. I’ve heard stories I’ve spoken to Chelsea or City, that’s all lies.” ... This rumour exceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeds any other rumour, gossip or wishful thinking from its inconceivability to the huge sums involved to the - everything. No more rumours until we sign someone, ok? The question to you is - how do you feel about Messi, Lionel Messi coming to Manchester United? #GGMU ... P.S. This is not the first time i have ever featured Messi on this page (in positive light). Does that mean United fans will not begin (at least) liking CR7s biggest competitor because of it? #mafeeeeeeeeelings ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ii #Eddy Nkutumidde
